Taliban claim responsibility for 27 killed in suicide blast in Hangu, Pakistan

The Taliban has claimed responsibility for a suicide attack in which 27 people died and scores were injured on Thursday at a District Central Office in Hangu, northwest Pakistan.

Agence-France Presse reported officials as saying that the blast was carried out by a suicide bomber driving an explosive-laden vehicle.

The Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has claimed responsibility for the attack saying it was to avenge the death of Al Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden who was killed by US Navy Seals in an operation in Pakistan on May 2.
The head of the DCO in Hangu, Mohammed Siddiqui, speaking to the TV channel Express 24/7, said at least 27 people were killed and 45 injured.

He said: “The bombers did not reach their intended target–the DCO building and had detonated at a check post.”

However, the DCO office and adjacent building were completely destroyed.

The office is located near a local bazaar and courts.

Eye-witnesses are reporting heavy casualties at local hospitals which have declared emergency.

Timeline of attacks in Pakistan since Bin Laden’s death:

On May 13, suicide bombers attacked a military training academy in Charsadda, northwest Pakistan which killed 98 people. The TTP claimed responsibility for this.

On May 16, a Saudi diplomat was killed by gunmen on a motorcycle in Karachi just days after attackers threw hand grenades at the Saudi consulate in the southern port city. No one claimed responsibility for these attacks though it is widely believed to be an act of Al Qaeda.

On May 18, militants in Peshawar attacked a security post in a four-hour gun battle in which 17 people, 15 of them insurgents, were killed. No one claimed responsibility for that attack.

On May 20, TTP claimed responsibility for the attack on a US consulate convoy in Peshawar which killed one Pakistani and wounded two Americans.

The following day, 16 people were killed in the northern tribal regions when a truck carrying fuel for NATO forces was bombed. The TTP claimed responsibility for that.

On May 22, in a bloody 16-hour gun battle that took place at the PNS Mehran Naval base in Karachi, 10 military personnel were killed and two surveillance aircrafts destroyed. The Taliban claimed responsibility for this deadly attack.
