Rallies, meetings mark May Day celebrations

Rallies and public meetings marked the May Day celebrations in the city on Sunday.
Scores of workers and trade union leaders took out a march from the Kerala High Court junction to Boat Jetty in the city marking the celebrations. Inaugurating the public meeting, senior trade unionist and CITU leader M.M. Lawrence called for the unity of working class and trade unions.
A political system controlled by the working class can only address the issues of the working class permanently. All other systems may succeed in providing temporary relieves. However, a permanent and sustainable solution would come only from the system where the working class has a decisive say, he said.
Mr. Lawrence said that the working class and the trade unions of the country should come together for achieving the goals.
Trade union leaders including K.P. Haridas, K. Chandran Pillai, P. Raju, Sherief Marakkar, S. Krishnamurthy, G.B. Bhatt and P.H. M. Ismail were among those who attended.
Members of the major trade unions namely CITU, AITUC, INTUC and TUCI took part in the procession and meeting.
