Resident: Fierce fighting continues in besieged Libyan city

(CNN) -- Moammar Gadhafi's forces continued fierce shelling in the western Libyan city of Misrata Thursday destroying a cement factory and cargo containers, a resident there said.
The report of shelling comes a day after an international leader warned that Gadhafi was destroying crucial food supplies in warehouses in Misrata in an effort to starve people into submission in the besieged city.
"There is a continuance of heavy shelling on the road leading to the seaport by Gadhafi's forces and onto Misrata's port using tanks," said the resident who wanted to be identified only as Abdlsalam, for security reasons.

"I couldn't hear any NATO planes today," he added.
The shelling stopped a ship that was to evacuate people from coming into the port, Abdlsalam said.

Wednesday U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and a Libyan rebel leader spoke about the toll the intense fighting in Misrata has taken on residents.
Misrata has been especially vulnerable in the ongoing fighting, said rebel spokesman Shamsiddin Abdulmolah. Gadhafi's tanks have been pounding the city, where several more people were killed Wednesday, Abdulmolah said.
At least 10 people were killed and 30 were wounded, a doctor told CNN Tuesday.
Clinton said that Gadhafi's forces have reportedly destroyed crucial food supply warehouses in Misrata and cut off water and power to the city "in an apparent attempt to starve (residents) into submission."
Snipers have targeted Misrata residents seeking medical attention, she said.
Also Wednesday delegates from Arab and African nations and NATO offered support to the Libyan rebels during a summit in Qatar stating they were trying to find ways to get money and humanitarian aid into Libya.
