DMK seeks a ‘respectful defeat’ as the people rejected money covers

Tamil Nadu registers 75.21 percent and Pudhucherry 83.62 percent
Seeking a ‘respectful defeat’ the DMK men had poured huge money in almost all the 234 constituencies in Tamil Nadu, while the two week heated electoral campaign came to an end on 11th April.
Even in the Kolathur constituency, from where the Deputy Chief Minister MK Stalin is seeking his election, money amounted nearly Rs.2 crore was seized by the authorities of Election Commission on 12th April.
In many places including Madurai, DMK men with money covers each was filled with Rs.500 had approached the voters house by house and compulsorily bribed them. At many villages and even in towns and cities, they created sudden power cut with the help of some electricity board officials and distributed money to voters.
But in various places they were caught in red-handed by the vigil cadres of AIADMK-CPI (M)-CPI-DMDK and alliance parties.
Interestingly, the ‘campaign against bribing and selling votes’ gathered a massive response among the people; particularly in Madurai, where the central minister MK Alagiri had practiced the worst crime against democracy, at many residential areas the people reacted angrily and rejected the money covers given by the DMK men. They categorically denied that their votes are not for sale.
Along with money, DMIK goons unleashed violence at some places. At Pennagaram constituency a DMDK cadre was brutally murdered by DMK goons, when he was preventing the bribing. Here CPI is contesting.
With this account, polling for the 234 Assembly constituencies in Tamil Nadu began on a brisk note on 13th April morning with about 4.6 crore voters expected to decide the fate of 2,773 candidates.
Political heavyweights whose fortunes will be decided include Chief Minister and DMK president M Karunanidhi, his arch rival and AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa, Karunanidhi's son and Deputy Chief Minister M K Stalin and DMDK actor-founder Vijayakanth. 12 CPI (M) contestants including state secretariat members A.Soundararajan, K.Balakrishnan, K.Thangavel, A.Lazer and the party assembly leader K.Balabarathi are in fray.
People came out in good numbers early in the morning and queued up before booths as polling began under the watchful eyes of security personnel who have been deployed in good strength. By the end of the day it was reported that 75.21 percentage polling.
In the union territory of Puducherry also, the polling to elect 30 members to the Assembly began with a brisk note and large queues were seen before the booths. Here 83.62 percentage polling had registered according to the EC.
Jayalalithaa confidence
Speaking to reporters after casting her vote at a polling station in Chennai AIADMK leader Jayalalithaa,
who is contesting from Srirangam constituency, expressed confidence that her party along with alliance parties would win the polls and form the government.
Karunanidhi changed tone
Even the DMK-Congress combine is heading towards worst ever defeat, voicing confidence that his party will win the Tamil Nadu Assembly polls, DMK president M Karunanidhi after casting his vote hinted at a possible coalition government, a key issue said to have been raised by long-time ally Congress as a post-poll arrangement.
During the tough seat-sharing bargaining between Congress and DMK, the national party is said to have made a strong pitch for a share in power.
The Congress has been out of power in Tamil Nadu since 1967 when it wsa unseated by the DMK, than under party founder CN Annadurai.
