BEIJING/NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Chinese president Hu Jintao are expected to discuss the possibility of taking a joint stand on the Libyan crisis during their meeting on the sidelines of the Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa ( BRICS) summit on Wednesday.
The two leaders will also explore the possibility of making Libya a part of the economic bloc's joint communique at the end of the summit in Chinese coastal town of Sanya. "China and India should send out a joint signal on the crisis. They may not directly challenge the West's role but at least ask for an end to fighting and convey how seriously they feel about it," said Ma Jiali, a South Asia expert at the state-run Institute of Contemporary International Relations.
Singh and Hu will also discuss the possible resumption of bilateral defence exchanges and Beijing's controversial stapled visa policy for Jammu & Kashmir born Indians. Chinese foreign ministry on Tuesday indicated that Beijing was ready to discuss these issues and resolve differences. "China is ready to work with India to have friendly consultation and properly handle the issues relating to people-to-people exchanges," foreign ministry spokesman Hong Lie said.
Beijing issued normal visas to four J&K born journalists visiting China to cover the summit. Experts said a joint stand on issues like Libya could bring the two countries together.
